Overcoming False Guidance

Did you know that many people come to our churches and make “professions of faith” in Christ but continue their old ways of seeking guidance and continue in their old practices? You’d be surprised. The first step to freedom in Christ is to renounce previous or current involvement with any activity or group that denies Jesus Christ, offers guidance through sources contrary to the Word of God or requires secret ceremonies or covenants. In your daily life, how many people have you come in contact with that claim to be Christian and still participate in Masonry, Eastern Stars, Fraternal Orders, and the like.  You can’t hold an allegiance to God and sources that are contrary to the Word of God.

Lets take a look at what the bible says we need to do in order to be on the path to freedom. Proverbs 28:13 says “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” (NIV) To renounce means to forsake or say no to something or someone. Renounce is the first step toward repentance, which means to turn away from one thing and toward something else. Did you know that in the old church, they use to have you publicly declare that you renounce Satan and all of his works and all of his ways? Sure did. Historically this has been a part of the Church’s profession of faith since it’s earliest days.

To be completely free from the past, it is necessary for each person to specifically renounce ever false religion, false teacher, false practice and every means of false guidance in which he or she has participated in. Listen to this, if we declare something to be true (such as water baptism in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ) then it is just as important to declare the counterfeit as false. You cannot, I repeat, you cannot believe the truth and a lie at the same time and still experience your freedom in Christ.

Once we (meaning the person) renounces sin, they can  repent and renew their minds. We can renounce the lies, the false guidance and the false teachers. We can choose the truth because “we have the mind of Christ” (I Corinthians 2:16).

Paul warned us what we should expect in the end times: “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1) Jesus himself even said “For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.” These deceptive belief systems and false teachings are counterfeits. They may appear to mimic the truth, but they are in fact satanically inspired lies. (Now do you see why it’s so important to renounce Satan in order to overcome false guidance).

As you begin this step to overcome false guidance, you are helping people take back any ground gained by the enemy in their lives, issue by issue, step by step. When witnessing, here are some questions that you need to ask a person (and this person can be churched or unchurched):

  1. Have you ever had some kind of demonic encounter in your house or a room at home?
  2. Are there recurring nightmares or a present fear associated with their dreams?
  3. Ask if they have had imaginary friends, spirit guides or some kind of angel counsel or guidance.
  4. Ask about the battle for their mind. Why? Well many people believe that negative, blasphemous and condemning thoughts are their own. You see, this is clear deception.
  5. Ask about their involvement with mediums, beings they thought were aliens and any secret vows or pledges they have made.
  6. Ask about the possibility of any involvement with satanism.
  7. Finally, ask them if they have experienced any religious or spiritual experience that was not of God such as being visited at night by an evil presence, having visited a questionable church or having participated in some offbeat religious experience.

Saints, do you get the picture now. YES this is deep but I have to go there. We are pastoring people who have experienced so much negativity in their lives and you mean to tell me the only thing we can do is preach on prosperity, get rich quick schemes and how to just “name it and claim it” and its yours. How in the world am I going to “name it and claim it” if I leave the church and still consult mediums? How in the world can I expect the Holy Ghost to even enter into my very being if I leave your church and still claim to have visions of spirits coming to visit me every night from the dead? It is utterly importantly that we get to the root cause of all this FOOLISHNESS (so to speak) that is running rampant in our churches. Dont act like its not there because it is. If you dont believe me, ask the average person who no longer goes to church what caused them to stop going in the first place. Its time to go back to preaching deliverance (and preaching deliverances does not mean spitting up and rolling on the floor either unless by chance your casting our a demon). You need to sit these people down and talk with them and find out their background. This is the only way the person is going to ever overcome false guidance.

People that have been guided falsely must truly and openly confess to the Lord what they have participated in, renounce it in the Name of Jesus then thank God that they are forgiven through Christ. Bottom line, whenever you renounce a lie or any counterfeit experience, you need to affirm the truth that will enable you to live free in Christ.

I pray that as you have read today’s lesson, you start to see where we have gone wrong in the church world and immediately start to fix these problems using scripture and of corse being filled with the Holy Ghost and truly delivered yourself. Remember, discipleship is to turn all people into fully devoted, mature followers of Christ. But first you have to overcome false guidance.
