Overcoming Deception

Jesus described Satan as the father of lies. “Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies” (John 8:44). Satan cannot speak from the truth because there is no truth in him. He can distort the truth, and he will even quote Scripture, as he did when he tempted Jesus (see Matthew 4:6).

Did you know that Satan keeps people in bondage by deceiving them and blinding the minds of those who do not believe? He sure does! You see the battle is for the mind. If he is able to deceive Christians into believing a lie, then they will live in spiritual impotency. Remember that phrase we use to say in the old church “The Devil is a liar and the truth is not in him!” or “That is a lie from the pit of hell!” Remember how the old church use to be soo in tune to scripture that when something contrary came about, we openly would rebuke it in the Name of Jesus making sure that everyone including Satan and his demons. (Oh yes, I love the old way).  Well see, we did this for a few reasons. We understood that when Satan’s lies are exposed, Satan’s power over the believer is broken. This is one step in overcoming deception. EXPOSE SATAN so that the POWER OF SATAN is BROKEN!

Satan will twist Scripture or tell half truths to subtly deceive you. We must trust God to expose the deceit remembering that “the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4 NIV). In overcoming deception, we must be dependant on the Lord for discernment. Remember discernment (you know I feel I need to rename this series “Old School Church”). Now when is the last time you heard of words like “discernment” in the modern day church. We’ve forgotten about that! Well its time to bring it back in Jesus Name.

Remember, the way we overcome the father of lies is by choosing the truth. We are not called to dispel the darkness; we are called to turn on the light. Start to thank God for the truth which will set you free. Have new converts (and even old converts) acknowledge that they have been deceived by Satan however the you must rebuke all evil spirits that are deceiving you. Ask the Holy Ghost to guide you into all truth (so that your not deceived). Below are some common ways people are being deceived by the world. I have listed the deception and then the scripture to combat it.

Believing that acquiring money and the things will bring lasting happiness.

THATS A LIE! Read 1 Timothy 6:10 which says “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Believing that excessive food and alcohol can relieve my stress and make me happy.

THATS A LIE! Read Proverbs 20:1 which says “Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”

Believing that having an attractive body and personality will get me what I want.

Another lie the world will tell you. Read 1 Peter 3:3-4 which says “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

Believing that gratifying sexual lust will bring lasting satisfaction.

MAJOR LIE! Read Ephesians 4:22 which says “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;”

Believing that I can sin without any negative consequences.

Lie! Read Hebrews 3:12-13 which says “See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Believing that I need more than what God has given me in Christ.

I know this came directly from Satan. Read 2 Corinthians 11:2-4, 13-15 which says “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.”

Believing that I can do whatever I want to do and no one can touch me.

1 Peter 5:5 “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Believing that unrighteous people who refuse to accept Christ go to heaven anyway.

Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 which says “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Believing that I can associate with bad company and not be corrupted.

1 Corinthians 15:33-34 “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.”

Believing that I can read, see or listen to anything and not be corrupted.

Proverbs 4:23-27 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”

Believing that I must gain the approval of certain people in order to be happy.

Read Galations 1:10 “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Identifying areas of self-deception is a way for people to discover wrong beliefs so that they can continue to deal with them. I encourage you to trust in the Holy Ghost by consistently reading Gods Word so that you are not blinded by deceit. If we can start to pick out every area that is contrary to the will of God and combat it with scripture and the savings power of the blood of Jesus, we will be successful in overcoming deception. Then watch a great revival break out in your own church where souls will be flooded at the altar crying out what must they do to be saved. It’s only by the saving blood of Jesus that anyone can overcome deception, and it first starts with renouncing the lie and walking in the truth.
