The Pentecostal Baptism Of The Holy Ghost

The word “ghost” means “the spirit of the departed.” The Holy Ghost is the Holy Spirit of God that dwelled in the body of Jesus Christ, left that physical body on Calvary so that the flesh could die, and then re-entered the body on the third day, resurrecting it. It is this same power which was poured out in the hearts of believers to make them overcomers.

The Old Testament talked about the Spirit of God that was going to be sent, poured out in the lives of believers. God said He would literally pour out His spirit upon all flesh.

The Spirit of God was very active in the Old Testament; however, the people of the Old Testament did not receive the Spirit of God in the measure that we receive it today because we are a part of the Church Age when the Spirit of God is being poured out. God was with them in the Old Testament, but God is in the people of the New Testament.

Jesus, during His earthly ministry, promised the believers they would be filled with the Holy Ghost. He said it was going to come to His disciples, His followers. The Holy Ghost is called the Comforter, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Light, the Spirit of Truth.

Do we need the Holy Ghost?

Receiving the Holy Ghost is not an option. It is a command towards salvation. John 20:22 says “Receive ye the Holy Ghost.”

It is part of the New Birth and is essential for salvation. John 3:5 says “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Receiving the Holy Ghost is part of the scriptural plan for salvation. Acts 2:38-39 says “Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

The Holy Ghost is Essential to Holiness, and Holiness is Essential for Heaven. God has commanded us to be Holy because He is Holy. Hebrews 12:14 “Follow peace with all men; and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” Leviticus 11:44 says “For I am the Lord your God; you shall therefore sanctify yourselves and ye shall be holy; for I am holy.”

The necessity of holiness is stressed in our Bible over 600 times! It is essential if we are to see God; yet, it is impossible without His Spirit living in us. Man can become holy only through divine assistance, primarily the infilling and indwelling of the Holy Ghost.

God knew we could not be holy by our own efforts, and His unfathomable love for us provided the power we would need by the indwelling of His own Spirit inside of us. He has made every provision for our salvation.

Without the Spirit, We Do Not Belong To God. Romans 8:9 “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man have not the spirit of Christ, He is none of his.”  The Spirit affirms we are His children. Romans 8:14,16 says “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

As you can see from the above scriptures, Pentecost is very important. It is not a denominational experience but it is an experience unto salvation. Our job as Spirit filled believers is to tell the world of their need for Pentecost. Tomorrow, our final lesson we will discuss preparation for receiving the Holy Ghost. Then Sunday, we will put into action everything we have learned this week and give thanks unto God celebrating Gods precious gift unto us, The Holy Ghost!
