Eddie Long: What The Scriptures Say About The Qualifications Of A Bishop

Above you will find a news interview of the oldest young man who was the 4th to join the lawsuit against Bishop Eddie Long. The young mans name is Jamal Parris and he is 23 years old.

Lets turn to the Holy Scriptures in order to get a clear understanding of what God requires for those that operate in the office of a Bishop.

1 Timothy 3:1-7

1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Now, I did not say this. The Bible says it. When choosing a church home and a leader to follow, it is important to be lead by the Holy Ghost, however it is also important to turn to the Holy Scriptures to make sure that your Bishop/Pastor is in line with the Word of God concerning the office that he holds. The sad thing is that most people choose ministries that are all about the “hype”. They want to go to the latest and greatest church that has the best choir, the best edifice, and the most popular preacher. No one seems to want to use discernment when it comes to choosing a ministry. “Even if you are not called into the full gift of discernment, you can gain a measure of skill. Scripture says that we should desire the gifts of the Spirit. It is expected of us that we should discern between the right and wrong, good and evil, spirits of truth and spirits of error.” (RM Harrington)

After reviewing the interview above, I find that there is some validity to what the young man is saying. It is apparent that he is hurt over “something” that happened at Bishop Longs ministry. He is anguished over someone who was a father figure to him and how somehow trust was broken by this person who is looked to as a “daddy”. I cannot confirm nor deny if any of the allegations (i.e. events that may have take place) actually did ever happen, but I can confirm that this young man is hurting.

Here is a stern warning to Pastors who scatter God’s flock. Turn with me to Jeremiah 23:1-4

1 “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the LORD. 2 Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the LORD. 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD

“We have a wonderful promise from God—that He has not forgotten about us and that He will punish those who are most responsible. Even though there was sin from the top to the bottom within the church, the ministry bears the major portion of the responsibility for the church’s scattered, weak condition because we should have done something.” (James W. Ritenbaugh)

The bottom line we must remember Saints, the bible is going to trump/over rule any law of the land concerning this situation. Yes this situation might go to trial or even settled out of court, but the major judge that everyone has to answer to is the Lord Jesus Christ. Are you teachings what the Apostles taught or are you attempting to make scriptures confirm to erroneous teachings?

Remember “but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.” Dead or Alive, you will give an account to God concerning the things you have done. It is my prayer that healing start to take place in the lives of all of those who are being affected in a negative sense concerning this allegations.
